Corsican Woman with a Pitcher -– Corse à la cruche - Size #3 / Grande

Corsican Woman with Jug -– Corse à la cruche

A young Corsican woman carrying a pitcher / jug of water on her head (an ancient method). The pitcher is the traditional green-glazed pitcher, the specialty of Aubagne, a small town in Provence near Marseille. At one time Provence villages had water carriers and inclusion of this figure in the creche symbolizes the scarcity of water in Provence at various times in the past.

The Corsican Woman with a Pitcher, in traditional Corsican dress, is one of 3 figures Carbonel has created representing the French island of Corsica.
