The Couple under the Umbrella represent middle-class prosperity. He is dressed in his Sunday best, with his suit and a wide-brimmed hat. She wears a large, fringed cashmere shawl and the traditional white "couqueto" headdress. He brings mulled wine and she brings a black hen (the black hen is revered for it's broth - a broth with fortifying virtues kept for women who have just given birth). They travel proudly, sheltered under a big red umbrella - a sign of respectability in Provence.
