Angel Orchestra Musician with Barrel Organ

Wendt and Kühn Angel Musician with Barrel Organ

A barrel organ (or roller organ) is a mechanical musical instrument consisting of bellows and one or more ranks of pipes housed in a case, usually of wood, and often highly decorated.  This barrel organ is played by a Grünhainichen Angel turning a crank. The pieces of music are encoded onto wooden barrels (or cylinders), comparable to the keyboard of a traditional pipe organ. Other names include hand organ, cylinder organ, box organ, street organ, and grinder organ.
