Highwayman/Thief - Brigand
The thief, or highwayman, is a robber of the "high roads." He wears the costume of an actor portraying the part of a Sicilian "brigand" of Italian operettas. He is renowned, according to Maurel's 'Pastoral,' for being the robber who stole the blind man's son. In rural Provence the Blind Man became a symbol of humility and patience. He walks with his son Simon to the Provençal nativity. There, the presence of Christ causes him to regain his sight and he recognizes his other son, Chicoulet, who had been stolen from him by the Thief.
