The farmer holds a piglet in his arms. The pig is important in Provence as it is revered as a truffle hunter - with its extremely sensitive sense of smell and a natural fondness for truffles. Shown here is a man today with his truffle hunting pig in Provence.

The Man with a Pig is dressed in the peasant's traditional long, blue smock (the "blodo"), wears a knotted handkerchief around his neck, and wears sabots (farmers' wooden clogs - carved from a single block of wood) on his feet.
