Lucky Lady Bug

Lucky Lady Bug 2.2" glass ornament. Inge-Glas #10-473-S001.  Mouth-blown, hand-painted.

The Lady Bug is generally considered to bring good luck.

Legend card:  "Ladybug... The ladybug has evolved into a symbol of good luck.  Centuries ago, German farmers were devastated by the loss of their crops to pesky garden bugs called aphids.  The farmers' livelihoods were at stake, so they prayed to the Virgin Mary for answers to their pest problems.  The farmers rejoiced as tiny red and black spotted beetles appeared and destroyed the aphids.  The beetles saved the crops and the farmers named the helpful beetles 'Marienkafer' or Mary's beetles, after 'Our Lady,' the Virgin Mary."  - Inge-Glas
