Comtadine Dancer - Danseuse comtadine
The Comtadine is a native of the comtat Venaissin (near Avignon).
Wearing traditional, colorful attire, the Provençal dancers gaily step to the music of the traditional Provençal Tambourines (drums) and Galoubets (flutes). They dance the Farandole or the dance of the Cordelles (ribbons - a Pole dance - where each dancer holds the end of a ribbon attached to the top of the poll; as they dance around the pole passing in and out around each other, the ribbon is braided; then they dance the reverse and end in their original positions, the braid undone). The Farandole and the Cordelles are folk dances enjoyed to this day at Provençal festivities and parades.
