Man Playing the Dulcimer - Jouer de tympanons
This musician is called a drummer and plays the Provencal tambourine, or "dulcimer," a percussion instrument membranophone made of wood (usually made of walnut). The Provençal tambourine is cylindrical in shape with a round of skin on each side made of stillborn calf skin (a Provençal specific attribute - this skin is very fine), a tension system called the "Cantarello" or "sedo" (a small string stretched between the two skins which vibrates to the resonance of the upper skin - giving the instrument the sound of a crackling fire), and a strap. The delicacy of the calf skin indicates that this instrument was likely to have been used almost exclusively inside, rather than in parades. It is played with two small wooden mallets ("masseto") with large round tips, usually made of ivory.
