There was a time when the Woman with a Stove was commonly present at the markets and on the docks of Provence. The little iron or china stove on her head was used to heat food, especially soups and stews, for the open-air sellers and those on their boats. She sells portions of her warm offerings to hungry passersby. She carries a bellows to keep the fire burning brightly.
