The Couple under the Umbrella represent middle-class prosperity. He is dressed in his Sunday best, with his suit and a wide-brimmed hat. She wears a large, fringed cashmere shawl and the traditional white "couqueto" headdress. He brings mulled wine and she brings a "fougasse" - a round cake, pierced with holes and made from flour, olive oil, sugar and flavored with the essence of orange-blossoms. They travel proudly, sheltered under a big red umbrella - a sign of respectability in Provence.
