Large Village House with Pigeon House (Dovecote) - Grand Modele (pigeonnier)
At the top of this Large Village House is a Dovecote - an aviary / house for pigeons. The dovecote provided fresh meat and highly valued manure and was a sign of the social rank of its owner. To have a dovecote one had to own a definite amount of land for each pigeon. Originally know as a "columbarium" (the French word for dove is "dove," which is a symbol of peace and love), the bird holds a significant place agronomic in Provence's history. Breeding was not permitted in towns - and thus was spread to the plains of Provence.
