Tramp - Vagabond - Lou Patiarie
A beggar, the tramp roams from village to village, helping himself along the way with a "cane" crafted from stick. He may sell rags (calling out "Li pato! - Rags!) but, he survives on public charity. He carries all his worldly belongings in a bag over his shoulder tied onto a stick. His clothing is tattered and patched. He is a symbol of compassion and important to the creche. Although he has nothing to give, he travels to the stable to pay homage to Jesus.
Charles Galtier, in The Santons of Provence, comments that traditionally Tramps, Gypsies, and Beggars were all called "cheapjacks."
