"A Journey through time. Fo the trade fair, I have made all sorts of things - candleholders and figurines, including a pair of parents for the Berry Children," Grete Wendt wrote in a letter to Olly Summer, later Wendt, on February 11, 1922. This meticulously detailed pair became known as the Grocer and Groceress. Both appeared in the 1930 catalog in various versions, carrying an assortment of accessories. Now they are again joining the three Berry Pickers that have a permanent place in our manufactory's collection. The muted "earthy" colors of their clothing identify the figurines as humble tradespeople, characterized by hard work and modesty. The woman caries a jug filled with berries - but what lies inside her pouch and heavy basket remains a mystery. The Grocer, by contrast, reveals his wares: on his back, he carries four bolts of fabric and a wooden splint box. A small enamel jug holds a drink for the journey. While the Grocer's clothing is comparatively plain, the Groceress displays an array of patterns - from polka dots and swirls to the delicate wavy border on the headscarf. Painting the basket is especially exacting: ensuring the the fine checkered pattern extends evenly in every direction across its "rounded" cloth cover requires a keen eye and an exceptionally steady hand. One final design flourishes: true to the historic originals, the Grocer and Groceress have distinctive flat arms, a feature characteristic of certain figurines from the early years of the workshops. This detail lends the pair a nostalgic charm." - WK
