Picons (peeled oranges) Merchant - Marchande de picons
The Picons Merchant is unique to Marseille. She sits on a bench selling her wares - baskets of unpeeled oranges on one side and lower-priced peeled oranges on the other. The peeled oranges are called Picons after the famous orange aperitif Picon (based on a North African medicinal remedy) first created in Marseille in 1862 by Gaëtan Picon. Originally the Picon factory sold the useless orange peels for a pittance. The Picon Merchant is a wonderful solution - offering a much wider availability for this special way to buy an orange.
