Salt Tax Collector - Paludier - Size #2 / Elite

Salt Tax Collector - Paludier

The Salt Tax Collector of the Camargue was very important historically in France. They were abolished in 1791, yet from the middle ages on, the Gabelle, or Salt Tax, produced the highest revenue of all taxes in the country. The Salt tax collectors were even able to abritrarily collect whatever tax they choose, whenever, and wherever. It wasn't universal, but that it could happen was indicative of the power they held. On top of that they made you purchase a certain amount of salt, which of course had a tax on it. Many of the Salt Tax Collectors became individually wealthy as a result.

The salt mines of Provence's salt marshes in the Camargue are mined to this day.
