The old, bent Woman with an Oil Lamp, lights her way to the creche with her "Calen" - a small, hand-held Roman oil lamp (using olive oil as the fuel) that dates from antiquity. She wears a large, hand-woven, cashmere, fringed shawl imported directly from India.

She is seen by some to symbolize the old lady whose limitless devotion was noted during the last great European plague, the bubonic plague that hit Marseille in 1720.
